Sir,

Recent letters and articles seem to suggest the Malthusians are coming out of their holes again.

These doomsayers who, in times past, have claimed we will eat ourselves out of house and home, are now using the climate-change debate to impart their extremist views.

One does not have to be a brain surgeon to work out that zero population growth (ZPG) is a really bad idea.

In Australia, with an ageing population and a birth-rate below replacement level, it is self-evident that we need more babies, not fewer.

Who else will drive the economy, pay tax, provide security and maintain this great country, if not they?

The likes of Professor Barry Walters ("Baby tax needed to save planet, claims expert", Adelaide Advertiser, December 10, 2007), who suggests Chinese-style population control, should stay in their holes and do us all a favour.

Damian Wyld,
SA State President,
National Civic Council,
Frewville, SA
