Sir,

After the dust settles from the onslaught of Deputy Prime Minister Julia Gillard's attacks on Opposition leader Tony Abbott's advice to his daughters, one is forced to concede that her comments may have confirmed my "worst fears" about her, rather than about Mr Abbott.

I agree with Queensland Senator George Brandis's support for Tony Abbott's comments. Mr Abbott's advice was timely for this generation - and good advice for every generation!

Amazingly, Mr Abbott is being verbally accosted for giving sound advice to his daughters about valuing themselves and not selling themselves short. What then would Ms Gillard advise this generation of young women? Should I be afraid to ask?

Ms Gillard, rather than speaking up for women in today's society, has trivialised young women's self-worth, their adolescent vulnerability and the role of family, parents and, more particularly, fathers, in guiding and protecting those within their care and responsibility.

It is little wonder that families are seeing so little support for traditional family values from government policy-makers. Apparently, it is anathema to some of them to consider that such values have any place in our society.

Margaret Menzel,
Ayr, Qld
