In November 1942, only 48 hours after the Battle of El Alamein, General Bernard Montgomery’s stepson, Major Richard Carver, was captured by the Germans and taken to Italy. In July 1943, Carver and 600 other Allied POWs managed to escape from a camp. Carver’s son, now a BBC Washington correspondent, tells his father’s dramatic story.
